How I got here
Early career — United Airlines
Joined United Airlines in 1991. I learned what scale looks like, how decisions get made inside genuinely large organisations, and how much under-utilised talent sits inside every big company. It set the bar for what's possible and shaped how I think about structure and people in SMEs to this day.
Volvo Car UK — Product Manager
At Volvo Car UK I introduced a £5m cost-saving strategy that was implemented, not shelved. I then led the pioneering European launch of Volvo On Call telematics — early connected-car technology at a time when most of the industry hadn't worked out what to do with it. We launched incorporating it as standard with the technology pack, thereby giving our cars a genuine technological advantage vs the competition.
Designer Vision — CEO
As CEO of Designer Vision I led a business producing high-tech in-car entertainment solutions for Rolls-Royce, BMW and Volvo as a supplier. Working with FTSE 100 brands at that level taught me how the world's most discerning customers buy, what they tolerate from a supplier, and what they don't. It's a useful filter when I'm advising SMEs that want to win premium accounts.
Motion Simulation Ltd — Founder & CEO
In 2008 I founded Motion Simulation Ltd, a UK manufacturer of variable-driving-position racing simulators.
We developed two world-first technologies. I taught myself 3D CAD design, took over 1000 parts from concept through CAD into tooling then manufacturing whilst developing technologies with the the input of Brawn GP and the University of Leeds. We also were commisioned for special projects with clients such as Boeing, Jaguar and Babcock.
On the funding side I raised $13m in US venture capital, working directly with the VC president on strategy and roll-out. I learned cap tables, P&L forecasting and investor relations in real time, with real capital investment on the line.
Today MSL is still going with new products and partnerships. Consulting is the parallel work — bringing what I've learned to other founders building or scaling their own businesses.
