Frequently asked questions

1. How does pricing work?

The Discovery Call is free. Ad-hoc Advisory is £200 per hour, two-hour minimum. The Strategy Day is a fixed £1,200. The 90-Day Advisory Sprint is priced individually after a scoping conversation — it depends on what you're going through. All packaged options offer better value per hour than the ad-hoc rate.

4. What if a Strategy Day doesn't deliver value?

If by mid-morning we don't think we'll land somewhere useful by the end of day, we stop and you pay for the half-day only. The offer's there.

2. Is the £200 hourly rate negotiable?

No. It reflects 30+ years of experience and a track record of building, funding and running real businesses. That said, the Strategy Day and 90-Day Sprint represent better value per hour and will be how most clients prefer to work.

5. Do you sign NDAs?

Yes — as standard, before any commercial detail gets discussed.

3. What about travel and expenses?

Most engagements run on video — faster, no travel cost. In-person work is available when it's the right call (typically Strategy Days or longer Sprints). Travel time charged at half rate, reasonable expenses at cost, all agreed upfront.

6. Do you take equity instead of fees?

If after working together for a prolonged period, a potential partnership opportunity emerges, all options can be considered. But this is rare. It's a conversation, not a standing offer.

8. What's expected from me as the client?

The quality of any recommendation depends on the quality of the information behind it. Once we've scoped the engagement, I'll send you a focused list of questions and data requests. Clear, accurate answers to these — provided ahead of our working sessions — are what allow me to give strong, considered advice rather than generic input. It's the single biggest factor in whether an engagement delivers real value.

7. How quickly can we start?

A Discovery Call usually happens within a week. Ad-hoc Advisory and Strategy Days typically book two to three weeks ahead. A 90-Day Sprint depends on current capacity but could start within 4 to 6 weeks subject to scope of work.

9. Do I need to be in your sector for it to be useful?

No. I've worked across automotive, aviation, manufacturing, motorsport and consumer technology, and supplied premium customers including Rolls-Royce, BMW and Volvo. The recurring problems facing founders — strategy, funding, scaling, operations, product — repeat across sectors. What matters is whether the situation you're working through is one I've genuinely been through, not whether I've worked in your industry.

11. Why hire you rather than a bigger consultancy?

Because I do the work myself. With a larger firm you typically meet a senior partner during the pitch and then get a team of juniors during delivery. With me, the person you talk to in the Discovery Call is the same person doing the analysis, writing the model and giving the recommendation. Same accountability, no handover, no padded hours.

10. What kind of work do you not take on?

I don't do branding, marketing campaigns, software development or deep technical specialism — there are better-suited specialists for that. I won't take on a brief I don't think I can genuinely help with. If a Discovery Call shows I'm not the right person, I'll tell you and where possible point you somewhere better.

Reviews

What clients say about Jon Bell’s guidance

"I started my business in 2004 and grew it to a £45m business. Jon delivered a full reorganisation model for LA Micro UK during a sensitive director buyout process. Across multiple iterations he stress-tested every assumption, built P&L calculators, cash flow scenarios that held up under scrutiny, and produced working Excel models the directors used as the basis for the actual decision. The work was paid, structured, and on time — and most importantly, the analysis was right."

Dave Bell, Director, LA Micro UK (disclosure: Jon's brother. The engagement was a formal paid consultancy.)
